HT: Sold.

I absolutely love reading the newspaper. So, on holidays, when I am not particularly upto something, I take my own sweet time to read the morning paper while enjoying my cuppa. We have subscribed to The Times of India (TOI), all 7 days, and on Sundays, we get TOI and Hindustan Times(HT) - this is because of my special request because I like to read Vir Sanhgvi, and sometimes Karan Thapar and Sushmita Bose. I liked Poonam Saxena's articles a lot, a television critic. Her articles don't appear anymore. Brunch is my favorite anyway; except Seema Goswami(her writing is good, but I just don't see the point in her articles; by the end of most of them, she is a fat, middle-aged woman, harping about the things that she did not get, did not see, did not eat, did not do and things that she was not). So, anyway, HT churns out good stuff on Sundays. (TOI is always good.) The Sunday edition sometimes takes 3-4 hours for me to finish the entire lot. This is my order of reading:

1.Hindustan Times :HT
2.HT City :HT
3.Times Life! :TOI
4.Sunday Times :TOI
5.Delhi Times :TOI
6.Brunch :HT

The Times of India is brilliant. I especially like Nikhat Kazmi's movie reviews (Saturdays. Followed by readers reviews and ratings on the same movie in the succesive week.) But my most favorite is Shivjeet Khullar's 'Dilli To Pagal Hai'; the guy is a genius. The article features fortnightly on Delhi Times. Tuesdays I think, will check.
Fridays are the best with What's Hot. It is just perfect. Its got everything, weekend movies on telly, food reviews, book reviews, shopper's guide and a lot more.
Also, food critic Sabina Sehgal Saikia's articles are a delight to read (Fridays). Comes up with witty remarks and monikers.

About movie reviews, HT is a bad source to rely on. I used to like Vinayak Chakravorty's reviews, but they seem to have done away with him (Or he is done with them, whichever). Nowadays, its being done by a certain Khalid Mohamed. I didn't understand how he could pass off OSO with 3.5 out 5. And Saawariya with a measly 2 out of 5.

But I figured out in the following weeks...

The following Sunday, Brunch covered an elaborate piece on how Om Shanti Om was a celebration of the 70's. Stories about Farah Khan's triplets, and articles and interview's on Shah Rukh Khan's ponytails, cigarettes and kids, constant reminders of how Saawariya couldn't live up to its expectations, appeared almost everyday...

And then, today morning, Tuesday, 4th December, 2007, I was up, waiting for the paper-walla. I noticed he delivered HT as opposed to TOI (Weekday!)... I rebelled. He said I would have to make do with HT today. Anyway, that surprised me a little; nothing of this sort had happened before. On closer inspection, I realized his entire pile of TOI was missing (on the pillion's seat of his cycle) and the entire lot was dedicated to HT. Fine, I made peace and took my copy of HT home.

An entire ad dedicated to the success of Om Shanti Om greeted me. That is it. SRK paid HT for every word they printed against Saawariya. "Om Shanti Om INDIA'S BIGGEST GROSSER... EVER! THANK YOU WORLD" (sic).

He also made sure that everyone read his ad (the reason that TOI was out of stock on that day, made sense!). Facts be damned. Whatever happened to the highest grossers like Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India, DDLJ and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, that we knew of.
Its hard to believe that OSO has surpassed all of these within 5 weeks.

As for HT, they could do with some improvement, I really hate their gossip section, "Under Honey's Hat" (HT City). The language is barely readable...

Final verdict: Go for TOI, HT is loosing it.
